で、こういう「おばちゃんたちの下士官根性」の世界は、当然のことながら、これまでの日本の社会の中では、このように振舞うことが「得」だったから、皆がそれを見習ってやるようになり、成立してきた。「終身雇用」が「あるべき規範」であった時代には、そうやって無理をして体を壊しても、会社はちゃんと面倒を見てくれただろう。「武士の一分」という映画の中で、キムタク演ずる主人公は、「毒見役」という仕事のために失明してしまったが、お殿様はやさしくて、捨扶持を彼に与えて生活を支え続けた。これが、「終身雇用」時代の日本企業の美しい姿の象徴だった。（実際には降格されたりいろいろあっただろうが、クビにはならなかっただろう。）そして、妻はそういう夫を支えて、終身雇用の職にしがみ続けさえすれば、老後の心配もない。妻と夫の生涯全体のスパンで見た幸福の総量を、利子率で割引して（なんせ日本は低利社会だし）、現在価値に直した「幸福の現在価値」は、「妻を放り出して残業する」ことのほうが、「幼子をかかえた妻のために仕事を休む」よりも大きくなる。

しかし、もはやそんな時代ではない。会社に奉仕して無理して体こわしても、挙句に放り出されるのが関の山だ。それよりも、いざというときには助け合う家族のほうに、普段からエネルギーを注いでおくのが当然。そういうふうに、だんだん変わっていくだろう。
